AEDs

What is an AED?

AED stands for “Automated External Defibrillator”. An AED is used to shock a patient’s heart when they are suffering from cardiac arrest. For each minute defibrillation is delayed, the chance of survival is reduced approximately 10%.

Why are AED’s so important?

AEDs are important because they strengthen the Chain of Survival. They can restore a normal heart rhythm in victims of sudden cardiac arrest. New, portable AEDs enable more people to respond to a medical emergency that requires defibrillation.

Should my organization have them on location?

Studies have shown a higher incidence in certain locations. Some of the typical locations include:

  • airports
  • sports arenas
  • community/senior citizen centers
  • dialysis centers
  • transportation terminals
  • golf courses
  • gated communities
  • health centers/gyms
  • jails
  • large industrial sites
  • large shopping malls
  • large lobbies
  • nursing homes
  • private businesses
  • sport/event complexes
  • cardiology, internal and family medicine practices and urgent care centers.

How many AEDs should we have?

First Responder would be happy to assist you in conducting a site survey to determine the number of AED’s for your workplace. As the most critical time to use an AED is within the first four minutes, being able to leave the patient, obtain an AED and back to the patient in under three minutes is ideal.

How many people should be trained to use them?

As a general rule, you should expect to have 10 trained responders for every AED, although some organizations train many more people to improve response time and because of the employee involvement benefits of an AED program.
